October 16th is the day to join forces with the World Food Programme and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization to make a difference in the fight against hunger. Hunger is not just a local issue. It is a local, national and international issue that can affect anyone, anywhere at anytime.
Over 1 billion people are hungry in the world. By uniting together we can work to build a sustainable future where more food can be produced and food can get to those who need it most. A global partnership is the best way to accomplish wiping out hunger.
On Friday October 15th, political leaders and celebrities met at event in Rome to celebrate World Food Day's theme "United Against Hunger". Susan Sarandon was appointed FAO Goodwill Ambassador and joined in sharing the campaigns message with those attending the event.
Pope Benedict XVI shared in the same message for World Food Day 2010s theme when he wrote, "everyone-- from individuals to the organizations of civil society, States and international institutions – needs to give priority to one of the most urgent goals for the human family: freedom from hunger."
Jacques Diouf, Director-General of FAO, said in his online message, "The theme “United against hunger” highlights the need to launch a new green revolution, while emphasizing that the task of increasing food production is a job for everyone as is the goal of ensuring access to food.
Partnerships with governments, research institutes and universities, financial institutions and regional development banks, farmers’ organizations, pressure groups, the UN system, civil society and the private sector are needed to work together to achieve food security for all."
