On August 19th, the U.S. announced the establishment of the Pakistan Relief Fund and committed $90 million in relief aid to the victims of the natural disaster. However, it has been noted by the Washington Post that there has been a sluggish response by frugal governments to contribute and aid in the relief efforts compared to the aid given for places that suffer from natural disasters that kill thousands of people quickly. In all reality, the floods in Pakistan have affected over 20 million men, women and children. That is more people affected than those affected in the 2004 tsunami, the 2005 earthquake and 2010’s earthquake in Haiti combined.
According to Defense.gov, the U.S. has “rescued 4,924 people and transported 636,068 pounds of relief supplies.” Another 75,000 pounds of food and relief supplies are being transported to the area as of today.
Yahoo! has linked to a Pakistan Relief guide on their homepage for those who wish to help through donations. A few of the resources provided include the American Red Cross, Church World Service, Islamic Relief, UNICEF and the World Food Programme.
