Fred Lie doesn't shoo homeless people out the door when they come into Neighborhood Grinds, his coffee shop on Artesia Boulevard. He gives them a cup of coffee, often free of charge, and treats them with respect. Volunteers can tap into that spirit of amity to help count Los Angeles County's homeless population Tuesday through Thursday during the 2011 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count.
