In May, a team of bikers calling themselves Global Agents for Change set out to raise $18,000 for secondary and post-secondary scholarships for young people in developing countries and microcredit loans in an effort to help break the cycle of poverty on a global level. All money collected will go to the Global AFC Opportunity Fund.
The Global Agents for Change bikers set out from Vancouver, British Columbia and end in Tijuana, Mexico. Along the way the Break the Cycle riders will be sleeping in schools, churches and at campsites. Another group, the Cycling for Change team has organized a Ride to Reduce Poverty in America’s back yard. The group is lead by Fr. Matt Ruhl who was inspired after reading Catholic Charities U.S.A’s campaign to reduce poverty in half by 2020.
Fourteen others have joined Fr. Matt Ruhl on the Cycling for Change team and so far have covered over 4,000 miles from Cape Flattery, WA to Key West, FL. Fr. Ruhl explained his trip to Louisiana on Cycling for Change’s homepage, “It was important to me that we cycle through Louisiana on this ride addressing the root causes of poverty. Louisiana is one of the poorest states in the nation and because of that they have the highest per capita incarceration rate of any other state - or in fact - country in the world. The idea that Louisiana uses third grade reading levels to gauge the number of prison cells they will need in the future is horrifying to me. It should be to every American."
